Issue: Bathrooms and Trash Receptacles

1). Where will people go ( as in.. REALLY GO ?)

2). VDOT’s website seems to be wrong in saying who will take care of bathrooms and trash. They are non-responsive in addressing this.

3). Forces people to Trespass.

1). At a public information meeting on Sept. 9th, 2023 that DeRail organized, Botetourt County Supervisors Amy White and Steve Clinton attended (separately). Each of them had said that nothing was agreed to on such a matter. VDOT had been advertising this same misleading information at that time.

2). Craig County Supervisor Jordan Labiosa wrote this on June 9th , 2025 :

3). On Nov 5th, 2023 Wilderness Adventure hosted an event. This video from that day shows what may happen when bathrooms are not  available (or close enough). At about the 10sec mark you will see someone come up the hill, get back dressed, and move on. In one day of using the road as a trail, this was captured. How about when it’s 365 days a year,..and forever.  

There is likely false information being spread by VDOT. They have it listed on their website that the counties will provide and maintain them. However, VDOT does not have any evidence that justifies this claim. They are non-responsive in finalizing an  answer to this debate.  Will they use FORCE to get the counties to spend money on their project?

Both counties are not in good enough financial shape to commit continued spending towards any part of this trail. Craig is facing many issues that are of greater need than this, and Botetourt is heavily in debt.

VDOT is in charge of this project. It is classified under transportation. For that reason they need to take full responsibility of building AND maintaining it. All of it. Plain and Simple.

We ask that you do not support the Trail because of this matter. An important detail like this must be resolved before agreeing to anything. If you were building a house, would you sign a contract with a builder and give a down payment without knowing if there will be a bathroom?
